Heart
of the Lotus Sangha
Heart
of the Lotus Sangha welcomes anyone who wants meditate and explore
the Buddhist teachings as a means to living a more meaningful,
peaceful, and compassionate life. New meditators, the curious, and
longtime practitioners are equally welcome. We pay great respect to
the Buddha’s teaching, “find out for yourself.”
We
meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:15 PM
Our
evening begins with setting the intention of being mindful: present
for ourselves, “the moment,” and each other. We meditate
for about half an hour (instruction provided).
Twice
a month, Tracy offers a dharma talk exploring how the Buddhist
teachings can help us live more engaged, meaningful, and
compassionate lives. Aspects of bringing our practice into everyday
life is the theme of our regular peer-led presentations and
discussions.
Once
a month, we explore a chapter from our book-in-common. Books we have
studied together recently include Donald Rothberg’s The
Engaged Spiritual Life, Pema Chödrön’s When
Things Fall Apart, and Steven Levine’s A Year To Live.
A
Night of Silence, consisting of periods of sitting and walking
meditation practice, takes place once a month.
Since
a core value of our group is the alleviation of suffering and its
causes, we conclude each evening with a metta (loving-kindness)
meditation directed both to ourselves and to the world at large.
Our
tradition is quite “bare-bones” so we do not practice
much ritual.
The
Heart of the Lotus Sangha also hosts four daylong meditation retreats
each year at the Sky Creek Dharma Center. John Travis is a frequent
guest teacher at these retreats. He has long been a teacher at Spirit
Rock Meditation Center (www.spiritrock.org), and he founded the
Mountain Stream Medication Center (www.mtstream.org) in 1986.
